Child Welfare Services

In Lee County, approximately 80% of child welfare cases have substance abuse as one of the core factors. SWFAS works in partnership with the Department of Children and Families to help these families get back on the right track.

These services are not open for public referral. In order to participate in any of these services the individual participant and/or family must have been referred by a Child Protective Investigator with the Department of Children and Families or a Child Welfare Case Manager with Lutheran Services of Florida.

If you know of someone who is currently a victim of child abuse or neglect...
please visit http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/abuse/ or call 1-800-96-ABUSE

  • Family Intervention Services (FIS):
Family Intervention Specialists provide awareness, education, and support to families identified by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) with substance abuse issues. Specialists conduct interviews to determine the services needed to ensure a healthy, responsible, and thriving lifestyle. The goals of the Specialists are to help keep families safely together through education, referral and counseling prevention services. The (FIS) team serves Lee, Charlotte, Hendry, and Glades counties.
  • Family Drug Court:
Family Drug Court is a judicially directed treatment program targeting families who have been identified as abusing or neglecting their children and are involved with the child welfare system, and that the abuse or neglect appears to be related to a substance abuse problem for one or more adults. Tasks include identifying risk factors; accessing a continuum of alcohol, drug and related treatment and rehabilitation services; monitoring of abstinence by frequent alcohol and other drug testing; coordinating strategy to govern drug court responses to participants’ compliance; conducting ongoing judicial interaction with each participant; monitoring and evaluating to measure the program goal achievement and effectiveness; continuous interdisciplinary education to promote effective planning, implementation and operations, and forging partnerships amongst drug courts, public agencies and community-based organizations in order to generate local support and enhance drug-court program effectiveness.

Funding for Child Welfare Services is provided by Lee County Government and U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
